On a warm July 4th in 1948, at a San Francisco Lodge picnic, a new tradition was born with the first inaugural Bathing Beauty Pageant with Penny Lee Wong as the first winner. This event eventually evolved into the Miss Chinatown Pageant taking place during the Chinese New Year celebrations. Watch a short documentary on Penny Wong’s reflection on her experience.
The pageant was established as a way to promote Chinese culture and heritage and provide a platform for Chinese-American women to showcase their talents and beauty. It has since become a major cultural event in San Francisco’s Chinatown, attracting thousands of attendees.
The Chinese American Citizens Alliance is a non-profit organization that was established in 1895 with the goal of promoting equal treatment for Chinese Americans and preserving Chinese culture in the United States. The organization has been instrumental in supporting the Miss Chinatown pageant.
Through its support of the pageant, C.A.C.A. has helped to promote a positive image of the Chinese-American community and to provide a platform for young women to celebrate their cultural heritage and showcase their talents and beauty.
